All About Biochar: Why Blossom is Different

Blossom's Biochar

At Blossom, we produce our biochar in-house—because we believe that’s the only way to ensure the highest quality possible. Using state-of-the-art technology and carefully selected feedstocks, we create an exceptionally pure and consistent product designed for optimal soil health and long-term stability.

About Biochar

Since ancient Amazonian times, biochar has been used to create incredibly fertile soils. Known as Terra Preta—or “dark
earth”—these soils were the foundation of thriving civilizations. Today, with a better understanding of the science, we can bring the same time-tested principles into our own gardens to build healthier soil and stronger, more vibrant plants.

What is Biochar?

Biochar is made from organic materials like wood or plant matter. Through a process called pyrolysis, these materials are heated to high temperatures without oxygen, transforming them into stable, solid carbon. The result is a highly porous substance that holds water, nutrients, and beneficial microbes, making it a powerful addition to any soil.

The Benefits of Biochar

Increased Porosity

Biochar’s sponge-like structure allows it to hold water, keeping soil moist for longer. Its pores also create ideal homes for beneficial microbes, bacteria and fungi that break down organic matter, release nutrients, and naturally improve soil health.

Boosts Nutrient Availability

Biochar increases the soil’s cation exchange capacity (CEC), which is its ability to hold and supply essential nutrients like potassium, calcium, and magnesium. With a higher CEC, nutrients stay in the root zone longer, leading to stronger, healthier, and more resilient plants.

Stronger Roots & Looser Soil

By improving soil structure, biochar helps loosen compacted areas and increase aeration. This allows roots to penetrate more easily, access water and nutrients deeper in the soil, and receive the oxygen they need for healthy growth. The result: stronger, more extensive root systems and soil that stays soft and workable season after season.

Carbon Sequestration

Biochar also plays an important role in capturing and storing carbon. The plants used to make biochar absorb CO₂ from the atmosphere as they grow. When turned into biochar, that carbon becomes locked in a stable form that can remain in the soil for hundreds of years. Every bag of biochar you use helps remove excess CO₂ from the atmosphere—creating healthier soil while contributing to the fight against climate change.

Blossom vs Other Biochar

Not every biochar delivers the same results. Poor-quality feedstocks or shortcuts during production can create a product that looks similar but performs very differently. That’s why we take extreme care at every stage of our process. In our in-house lab, we test every batch to ensure it meets our strict standards for purity and performance. The result is a biochar that’s incredibly stable, effective, and built to deliver benefits to your soil for years to come.
